Dang, there's a lot of you coming from Canada. I'm only going to give you some advice on places that you should stop. Nashville, Tennessee.
That's probably a good half way point for you if you're going to stop and rest. Make sure you keep a full tank of gas. If I remember correctly, there aren't very many gas stations when you get about 100 miles outside of PC. |

be careful
Id say watch your speed through alabama and then right on in to florida!! Especially in alabama, lots of those small towns just love it when spring break rolls around! We received a ticket 2 years ago, but lucked out last year. Hope this year is the same!! Watch out for those alabama cops!!!!!!!! Enjoy

Really dont get all the bama complaints
I have driven though alabama countless times.. I really dont think it is different than any other state. Unless your planning on going 90 mph. I think alot of that is the bad rep they get in the media. Most states you go through if you can go up to 76mph with no problems. The only place I ever found that to be a problem was virginia. As for really long drives I recommend stopping often.. If your alone especially, you will get road fatigue otherwise. For those long drives make sure you watch national lampoons vacation first! LOL

im sure theyll do it in the tune up, but check your tire pressure every other stop or so...every tire differs, but you should probably keep it in the high 30's....37, 38, or 39 psi should be good.

High 30's??
I guess that really does matter about the tire.. Its written on the tire though the max tire pressure.. Norm Max is 40-42 psi. I know my tires are recommended to be at 32psi though.. When I autocross I move them up to 39psi. But for a long drive if there is ALOT of air in the tire expect a bumpy ride. Just read the tire and it will tell you what to put it at for best fuel efficiency.

I don't know how it is in Canada.. or in the Northeast... or in the West,...... but once you hit the Dirty South (especially ALABAMA and Florida like people say!)... beware small towns along your route.

Yea you may be right about that
"yea, i got toyos and keep them around 34 but those (and im guessing yours too) are performance tires."
I have Z rated tires so I guess that may have something to do with it. Havent driven my truck in a while so I cant remember what those were set at. By my car is definitly always set at 32 unless im going to a track. |

I have to agree with Tigerman. I don't think Alabama cops are too bad...last year we were pulled over in Florida, and made it through Alabama fine. Where I'm coming from in Alabama, I have to hit a lot of really small towns, but if you are coming from up north like a lot of you seem to be, you will take I-65 all the way to Montgomery and then hit US-231 I believe. I have never been pulled over while driving to PCB or Gulf Shores(Alabama's beach).

Personally, I've had a lot more problems with Indiana cops than anyone else. They're all along I-65 no matter what state you're in and they're dying to pull over people from out of state. Keep it under 80 and you should be OK.
My favorite city to drive through is Louisville 'cause I like watching the jets fly into the airport right over you're head. It's pretty cool. We usually don't stop anywhere except to get gas and use the bathroom. We want to get down there as soon as possible. |

1. Have car serviced.
2. Plan route- have maps, directions (and know how to use both) 3. Make sure you share driving duties and make sure they sleep while you drive (or they may sleep while you sleep) 4. Stay around 9mph over the speed limit and most police will leave you alone. 5. Watch your speed in construction zones. Most are watched and enforced and many have fines doubled if workers are present. 6. Make regular stops for rest breaks, not just for fuel. Look for highway rest areas that have security and if not available, look for bigger truck stops. Yes the drivers will look at you, but if you get a real hassle from anyone they will be there to save you too. 7. Like your tires, make a plan to check the oil at least every other stop for fuel (if not every stop for fuel) 8. Be careful. Lock your doors while driving, especially if you have to get off the highway. 9. Plan your return trip and be ready for it. Don't party all night before you leave. We want you to arrive alive, have fun, and get home safe so you can come back next year! |
