Was just gonna ask the same question, we are debating it now.
Anyone done it before? Hows the mass transit down there? Lotta busses? Taxi's rip you off? Is it necessary to stay on the beachfront? We were thinking of just gettin an el cheapo hotel and suckin up the taxi rides. |

2 years ago I stayed in the city part just right over the bridge. It was hella cheap though...I think like just $350 for that whole week! BUT...we spent a hell of a lot $$$ on cab fares! This one dude tried to charge us like $60 once...I was like FCK U r ya outta ya mind?! It was just a 5 min. drive to the beach! But its not the same experience as if u had a place on the beach. Its cool if ya throw everyone in a car at the last minute and decide to go like I did! Anyways, Have FUN!

Theres places on the strip across the street from the beach where you can stay real cheap. There not the greatest places but a place you can pass out at. Rooms are only like $60 a night with 2 beds.
I stayed at the Diplomat my freshman year for one night but I heard it burnt down or something. but it was only $60 |

Off the beaten path
I'm happy to report that the Diplomat Motel is open and if it did catch fire, it didn't make the news. A few other places you might consider if you are looking for budget class accommodations.
Coconut Grove - Its about a half a mile from the action Holiday Lodge - Again, just a few minutes from the beach Howard Johnson - Bayside - Nice Property in the city but still close. This place also has some extra amenities, Restaurant, bar, dock and Bayside. Travel Lodge - Across from the Coconut Grove. Other than the Howard Johnson Bayside which is a nice hotel, I won't claim to know the quality of these places. If you are looking for a good rate these hotel/motels should do the trick. |

We are staying at the Travelodge, I have a friend that stayed there last year and he told me that is not bad at all......well.....I'm sure is not the best thing out there but who cares right? half of the time we are going to be drunk......the hotel is 3/4 of a mile from the beach...thats a cheap cab ride or not to bad of a walk.....the best thing is very CHEAPPPPP.....:D

My buddies and I booked 5 rooms at the Days Inn Beach last April. We are paying $49 a night for each room. They were running some spring promotion I guess

At my first spring break in 2002 , I was somewhat in the same situation that kristylicious was in. I stayed at the Grande Gulf Holel for 350.00 for the week. The good thing was that Club Lavela and Hammerhead Fred's was within walking distance and I rarely took a cab.
In 2003, I used my experiences from last year and searched and found a room right on the strip across the street from Latitude's and Harpoon Harry's and I can walk everywhere (Makes for good exercise) |
