How Much Freedom 4 My 18YO Girl @ SB?

OK, people. I know you're focused on partying when you go down to PCB for SB. I'm taking my 18 year old HS senior down there with several of her girlfriends next week. I would consider myself a "cool" Dad and I want to let them have fun. After all... it's there senior year and it's spring break! I'm still young so it wasn't THAT long ago I was doin the same. My question is this: if YOU were the Dad, knowing what you know about the spring break situation down there, what would be some of "rules" you would lay out for the girls?

My MAIN concern is that they are safe. If anything was to happen to any of the girls, I'm responsible. So what agreements should I come to with them so they can party, have a great time, but stay close enough in touch with me so if they get into trouble I can be there for them? It's a given that they'll be drinking even though they're underage... I'm not stupid. Should I let them drink, but only the room? What about a curfew? 2AM? 3AM? How do I know they are safe back in the room at a "reasonable" hour?

Help me out people! If you were to lay out 4 or 5 "guidelines" that I want them to follow so I am comfortable they won't get themselves in a situation they'll regret, but still allow them to have a great time, what would they be?

Thanks!! Remember, you'll be a parent one day 2!

Hmmm... tough one.

1. Don't give them permission to drink even though you know they will try. You open yourself up to all kinds of liabilities... especially since you're responsible for all the girls. However, they should not be scared to contact you if they have been drinking and can't drive, or one of them is sick. Tell them they have a "get out of jail free" pass for that kind of stuff. Better that they know you will be there for them and won't reprimand them too harshly, than to be scared and not contact you.

2. Discuss a curfew with them and agree on a time. I would say no later than 2am, earlier if you can get them to agree to it. Clubs close at 4am, but the action at the clubs starts dying off earlier than that... ppl run out of money, get too drunk, or whatever and start going back to their hotels for after-parties. That's probably where they could get in the most trouble. The clubs are fairly safe, but the hotel room parties can get out of control.

3. Make sure they use the buddy system. Never go anywhere alone.

4. Make sure they tell you where they plan on going. If their plans change, they should call you and let you know.

5. You can be a little more lenient during the day. Less trouble around.

You're a brave man. Good luck!!!

Cell phones if leaving for a club, or something...

Make sure they have sexual protection, I know it's tough to discuss or think about this subject, but sex is on everyones mind during spring break regardless...

Keep in mind breakers tend to stay up through sunrise, so imposing curfews *every* night would ruin the basic additives of a solid spring break...

relax and have fun...

ideas

I would let them drink in the hotel room. The chance of them gettin caught drinking in a hotel room is very slim.Exp since you are with them.During the day let them hit the beach and do whatever they want.It is still kinda crazy during the day but not crazy enough to really worry.Have check in times.Like if the hit the beach at say 11AM and then they have more plans.Have them check in with you at like 4PM and then have them call you around 9PM to let you know they are ok and then you tell them that they have alcohol in the room, but if they are gonna have anything to drink while they are out to call you and you will come get them!Tell them not to trust guys to take them back to the hotel cause that could get them in a bad situation and chances are that the guys are in no shape to drive.Give them enough freedom to not want to go back home but dont let them disrespect you.You used to do the same things, just know that they are just wanting to have fun.
also..PLEASE dont let them go into the ocean if they have been drinkin. That is an easy way to drown.

My 18 year old son (senior in high school) just returned from PCB and told me he had the best week of his life. I was not with him but he told me most of the events of the week and they were all basically harmless fun. There were 10 of them in a room at the Howard Johnson Boardwalk. (7 guys/3 girls)

A parent would have to be an idiot to think their kid(s) are going to PCB or anywhere else for that matter, on Spring Break and not drink and party like crazy. (His heart is still in PCB and not in school).

He figured out a way to get a 21 and over wrist band, so he partied at the clubs like he was 21.

I basically gave him the following parental tips:

1). Don't drink and drive
2). Be sure to cover (condom)
3). Wear plenty of sun screen
4). Leave it in Florida

Good luck SB2004-Dad

When I was in PCB this past week, Harpoon Harry's threw 2 foam parties where they did not check id unless you were 21. I'm pretty sure it was for all ages. My friend that was 17 got in and so did someone who had lost his id. I'm not sure if they are having any more, but that's the only thing I know of for people under 18.

Cool Spring Break Dad

By all means, tell the girls not to go to any rooms!!!! You never know what can happen. Not knowing these girls, they must trust you enough for you to even go. I know it's not the best thing to do, but if they want to drink, they'll do it somewhere, somehow....my advice let them have a daquiri or something in the ROOM WITH YOU. You don't want your daughter to grow up and hide it from you. Oh yeah, I wouldn't let my tennage daughter go to any of the clubs! There's too much there that she may not be into just yet! I think it's cool if they go to La Vela with you during the day, that is if they let them in! Hope to help out!
