Beach Prepares for Spring Break
Paul Matadeen
You might feel a winter chill in the air, but city leaders in Panama City Beach are already looking to a sunny spring and a boost to our economy.
Tuesday city leaders met for their only meeting in November to discuss tourism now, and what the plans are for the year to come.
Their plan is to get the word out about Panama City Beach. Their audience is everyone. The time is spring break.
"Spring break is a market segment that generates an estimated $60 million a year into our economy," said Robert Warren, the Tourist Development Council CEO.
Tuesday business leaders and city leaders alike got a glimpse of the campaigns, the ads and the slogans to bring people from across the nation to the emerald coast. They also had a chance to give some critique.
"It appeared to me that there were some concerns, perhaps colors and images associated with some of the promotional materials and websites for the 2007 program. We're going to be looking at. We're to be analyzing what we can do better," Warren said.
The slogan will be much like last year, now PCB 07, and with reports of 13 percent more tourism so far for the year, city leaders hope they'll be able to ride that very same wave into the spring.
"We will take what our industry has said to use, and the board will pick some minor tweaking," Warren said.
It’s a work in progress, and progress that will only come from business leaders and city leaders working together for a common goal.
The spring break website, PCB 07, is already up and running. It's only one part of a larger plan to improve publicity for the beach.
TDC board members also passed a recommendation for city and county officials to raise the standard for sand on the beach.
