Is MTV going to make it to PCB in 2010?
Similar to 2009 I see the PCB tourist board seems to be 50:50 on whether to spend the approx 150k on MTV related expenses...
They appear to be saying it's not a money issue but a reputation they are trying to change. On the flip side the town can barely afford to lose the income of a lack of MTV spring break approval... I saw there was supposedly an open public meeting last Wednesday to discuss. Has anyone got any inside info? Went last year and looking to book up now for 2010 but I'm apprehensive to book without MTV signing on as maybe there will be better spots with them involved... |

Judging from the statement below it looks very doubtful that they will return.
TDC Chairman Marty McDaniel added "In fact what we've said is that we're not going to do the MTV thing anymore and we need to see how we can better move the destination forward given what we have to work with." gagirl made a post that covered this in a previous thread with the quote above in it. Spring Break Causing Debate On a similar note the Spring Break marketing budget has been cut in half. The Bay County TDC cut Spring Break Marketing Budget | pcbdaily.com Like ckozlgod said, i only liked MTVU for the sake that they seemed to bring in more people but they defiantly aren't a make or break for PCB IMO either. If they come, hey great, if not...at least we wont have 10:00am sound checks in the morning at the Boardwalk/Summit area

Actually Daniel, that article that you linked to from pcbdaily is from 2007. Back in 2007, the spring break budget for 2008 was cut in half.
The budget for 2009 was around the same as 2008 and for 2010, it is very unlikely any deal will be made with MTVu. There has been quite a bit of debate on the spring break issue and quite an agreement among PCB businesses that something has to be done to better control what happens here during that time. Read: Spring Break Forum: Answer to Cash vs. Chaos Conundrum? Management | pcbdaily.com I firmly beleive that spring break dollars are great for our area, but I have seen huge mistakes in the management of it all in the past. There needs to be a lot more planning that goes into how to handle the crowds that flock to our area during March and April each year. |

yeah mtv is a joke man, just brings in the douche bags trying to destroy the town. i just as soon have all those people stay home. mtv included. what would be great about mtv not being there is the party would be spread all over the beach instead of one hot sweaty mass of people you have to squirm through and fight for bathrooms.

According to WJHG, the Tourist Development Council met Tuesday and recommended severing the relationship with MTV-U.
Here's the link. Spring Break 2010 Recommendations

I think all of these are positive moves:
One of those recommendations is severing the relationship with MTV-U. - I don't have anything against MTV and I hope they still have a presence here, but MTV doesn't make/break Spring Break. From what I saw with what MTV promised out of the deal (see attached PDF from 2007) Panama City Beach failed to get a return on their invetsment. MTV fell short on every single portion of the agreement (they promoted Cancun and Miami WAY more than PCB each year, the PCB presence on mtvu.com SUCKED, promotion of partners and hotel partners was virtually non-existent and about half of the concerts SUCKEd cos they were 3 hours late.. or the performer only sang two songs and left... or several other lame issues) The TDC's also recommending the city avoid all types of college age directed advertisement, sticking mostly to family geared advertisement. - Good move. The businesses that benefit from Spring Break can always co-op and get affordable advertising (we still have some great SB2010 advertising and sponsorships available on Tripsmarter... hint, hint )Another of the approved TDC recommendations is to pay for extra law enforcement presence at the peak points of the season, including increased ATV and K-9 Units. - They also plan to make any businesses catering to the spring breakers take a workshop on avoiding potential problems. - Great idea! Hopefully they help businesses become proactive on Spring Break problems, rather than reactive. Helping Spring Breakers avoid problems rather than having them end up in jail is a win-win. I think these moves will make Spring Break better for everyone. The only downside to all of this is we lose MTV's pull for national artists. But, I think Club La Vela and Spinnaker (and possibly other clubs) can still pull in desirable bands and performers... even some national-level artists. I only went to one concert last year (3Oh!3) and it was amazing, they performed very well and the atmosphere was unlike any concert I've ever been to. While I dont think it would make or break spring break, I think it's hard for us to ignore that it would change spring break a bit.
I'm looking at Long Beach and Edgewater. I stayed at Long Beach last year and it was great because it was the exact same distance from MTV stage and Holiday Inn, so we got the best of both worlds. However, without MTV, the party will be bigger at Holiday Inn, and I'll be considering Edgewater more than likely... |

to be honest in 2007 when mtv was not there, i had a great spring break, it was awsome not being woken up at 8 AM by mic checks honestly it was a better crowd anyways, if the city put the money they spend on mtv into targeted advertising they would do alot better.
dont kid yourself, mtv will be there, and PCB will get the same ammount of minimal exposure from mtv that they have for the past 2 years. the thing to do now, is go add tripsmarter on your facebook, myspace, these are the new social meccas of 2000's and its the future of marketing, how many of you actually spend more time watching tv than using the computer, I bet theres not that many.
