Yep, those are sand-bar sharks. Hopefully we will catch some bigger ones this year. They are delicious!

I need to send my 9 year old son with you so you can show him how to catch a shark. For approx 4 years we have went to the pier during the days and nights with hopes of catching what you have caught. Never caught one. He NEEDS your advise so he can hook into one of them.

Here is my advice, forget the pier if you want to catch sharks. Just get a 10-12 foot long surf rod (about 20-30 bucks), a good spinning reel (another $20) some 25 pound test line, 4-6 oz. egg sinkers, a "gulf rig", hooks, and whole squid. Take all that stuff right behind your condo or hotel down to the beach, and fish right there. I always catch sharks from right behind our condo, they are a blast to catch and really good to eat. All that stuff I mentioned can be bought at the wal-mart in PCB or at and bait and tackle shop down there. Just make sure to let me know if you have any other questions, and I will be more than happy to help.

Thanks for the advise Matt. We will try that. Do we just go out to our waist or something. Also, what time of the day. During the day there are normally a lot of people swimming and a little concerned about bringing a shark alongside them. Didn't a kid loose a leg fishing this way a couple years ago.

Sounds like a good idea and something we will def try.

You can catch those sharks with out ever having to get into the water. Just use the heavy weight to cast between the first and second sand bar. The best times to catch those sharks are an hour or 2 before dark, all through the night, and early in the morning before the sun gets too high and the swimmers come out. Let me know how it goes, and I'll be routing for your son to catch one of those sharks! Don't forget the camera

Thanks Matt, sounds great. I promise we will have the camera. You have no idea how long this has been going on. Wake up in the morning, go to the peir....nothing, maybe some bait fish and once a stingray and remora. Then go back at night and have the crabs steal your bait. All for a little boy to catch a little shark................4 years of this. We will get the camera and give it a try. When we catch one, he will be holding the shark and a sign that says "Thanks Matt the Bowhunter" Why do we need a long pole? Whatg is the purpose of that.

Thanks

The purpose of the long pole is:

1) To be able to cast further
2) To help keep your line higher than the breaking waves

Also, check out the last picture in this thread, you'll notice my pole is in a pvc rod holder. That holds my rod, but also gets the rod tip up about 2 feet higher, keeping if further from the breaking waves. When you are fishing, you will have to keep an eye on the rod tip for any movement. The waves will move the tip a lot by themselves, but when a shark gets a hold of your bait the tip will shake violently. Just grab the rod, hang on, and start reeling. I really hope he catches one, he will enjoy all the people gathering around him on the beach to check out "Jaws" that he just caught!

We usually stay at regency towers, but this time around, we will be staying at the Flamingo towers. I'll be sure to let you know how the fishing went so you will know what to expect.
