Bad Experience at SHUCKUMS
Normally i would not do this, but due to how i was treated at this place, i feel the need to warn others.
Well the story was we had 5 in our party. We asked to sit outside and was quickly taken to our table. The waitress's and busboys are HIDEOUS. I have never in my life seen so many piercings in mouths and eyes. They just appeared NASTY with their clothing also. But we tried to ignore the help and i ordered a dozen raw oysters. Well the gal that brought me mine just shoved the tray over to me with no lemon, no nothing on it but the oysters. I noticed there were a couple of guys next to me that ordered the same thing and she was VERY ATTENTIVE to their needs if ya know what i mean. I finally got my lemon and was waiting on my families appetizers when she spilled tea at my back. She never said sorry or anything. It didnt get me too wet, but i at least wanted an apology. There again, she was getting attention from the guys next to us. So we get our food and it was actually pretty good this time. But we never got refills on our tea unless we asked for it. Time to pay the bill and we were charged 17% gratuity. 22 bucks worth. And the total was 99.01 So we give her a $100 bill and she just left. We asked her for the change because the tip was already included and she toldus that they dont give change back. Now i am already pissed because she did not deserve that high of a tip in the first place and then she tells us that they dont give back change. Even though it was not that much money, she already took 22 bucks worth and now she wanted the 99c ents making her get 23 bucks for doing NOTHING. We asked for the manager and they told her the story. She looked at us and laughed. I have no problem with givng that as a tip if someone earns it. But this chick didnt. I actually give more if they work for that much. Can you imagine how much these people screw people over for not giving change back. They round it off to the dollar in monies back. So why not charge by the whole dollar and not charge like that is what i want to know? to screw their patrons for more money. So that is my story. I will never grace the doors of that place again. They must need to pay for that new addition that no one was in when i was there. Last edited by alabamabeachlover; July-2nd,2007 at 03:34 PM. Reason: needed to add more. |

A couple of years ago I gave Shuckums a good review, but the last time we were there, we had a bad experience but assumed it was an "off night".
To charge an automatic gratuity for 5 people is unusual in my opinion (6 or more normally), but tipping should always be optional if the service is deplorable & you complain to the management. To have the manager laugh at you is unacceptable, but to refuse to give you your change back sounds like theft to me. Are the owners on an extended cruise or something? |

Wow thanks for the information, I'll make sure we don't waste our time going there. I would have been furious if I had been treated that way. Do they have a website with a way to contact them? The only bad thing is if the manager laughed at you, they probably don't put much stock in emails they get either. I'll make sure to tell everyone I know that is going this summer to avoid that place!!

No excuse for that kind of customer service! It's been more than a year since I've been to Shuckums... I remember service being fairly average there in the past. I wonder if it's gone downhill or if it was just a bad night for them.
With their reputation, I would suspect the owners do care and would want to hear about your experience. I hope you can get in touch with them so they can fix whatever's wrong. They've been a PCB legend for years now and hopefully they still care enough to keep up with their rep. Let us know if you get a response. You can tell a lot about a business by an owner's reaction to feedback. P.S. Here is the Shuckum's Website P.S.S. Do you guys really dislike piercings and tatoos that much? I know a lot of restaurants will make servers cover their tats or take out their piecings. Seems a little odd to me. I think a server's attitude and service define their professionalism... not their tatoos or piercings (no, I don't have any). Just curious since it was mentioned in this thread. We ate at Schuckum's Memorial Day and this week. They have the best oysters on the beach and our service was as good as it gets in PCB. The owner spoke to us and even gave us 6 free oysters. This is as good as it gets in PCB for quality and service
