Key West, FL -
Anglers can target the "big three" game fish of the flats while fishing with celebrities ranging from sports heroes to astronauts in the annual Mercury Southernmost Light-Tackle Anglers Masters (S.L.A.M.) celebrity fishing tournament. The catch-and-release event pits participating anglers against tarpon, permit and bonefish. Catching all three on the same day is known as a "flats grand slam."

Celebrity S.L.A.M. Tournament
September 11-13, 2009
Where: Key West Flats

The field of celebrity competitors has previously included baseball superstar Wade Boggs, who has won celebrity-division honors in past Mercury Redbone events; NASA space shuttle astronaut Bruce Melnick, who participated in both the Endeavor and Discovery missions; and football great Mark Cooper, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Denver Broncos.

The popular S.L.A.M. is the first in an annual Florida Keys autumn trilogy of Mercury Redbone celebrity angling challenges that raise money for the fight against cystic fibrosis. To date, the Redbone tournaments have contributed more than $5 million to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The lifestyles of cyctic fibrosis patients have been tremendously improved through advances in medications and therapies, giving them the independence they need to pursue their dreams. For tournament founder Gary Ellis, the fund-raising effort has a very personal meaning: his daughter lives with cystic fibrosis. Now an active 20+-year-old college student, she was not originally expected to live past her early teens.

The S.L.A.M.'s individual entry fee includes two days of guided fishing with a celebrity and access to all tournament social functions. For a team of two anglers, the entry fee is higher.

For more information about the S.L.A.M. and tournament registration forms, or for information about the Mercury Redbone Celebrity Tournament Series, call 305.664.2002. End of Article
