Civil War Days Festival

Key West, FL -
Built nearly one hundred and fifty years ago, Fort Zachary Taylor has stood for the strength and solidarity of the Union beliefs for nearly two centuries. In the Civil War, the fort was perceived as so menacing that Confederate soldiers never once attacked it. Now you're wondering what this has to do with your trip to Key West…it's about heritage.

Civil War Days Festival
February 10-12, 2012
Where: Fort Zachary Taylor

Every spring, the folks of Key West host the Civil War Days Festival. It is a weekend occasion to come out and celebrate the history the islands of Key West possess. Bring the entire family and be prepared to have an enrichingly good time. Throughout the two-day festival, costumed historical re-enactors assist guests in understanding what it was like living and fighting in the Civil War. Entering The Heritage Festival is like stepping out of a time machine, and stepping into the days of North versus South.

The festival is held yearly at Fort Zachary, which was opened to the public in 1985. Since that time, the State of Florida has continued to restore and reconstruct the ailing parts of this Civil War Era monument. Though not completely accessible to the public, several parts of the Fort's refurbishment have been completed, and it proves to be a visually delightful tour.

In addition to your visit to the Fort, take some time to enjoy the surrounding park. It's in the heart of the Keys, take advantage of the sun and lay on the beach, perhaps pack a picnic and enjoy a lazy day among fellow history buffs.

And if lying around is not your thing, strap on your fins and head out for some of the amazing snorkeling that only Key West can provide.

There is truly something for everyone at the Civil War Days Festival: history, entertainment, beautiful beaches and sparkling blue waters. With as much fun as this unique festival provides, you will hope history does repeat itself…year after year! End of Article
