Key West, FL -
The cover of The Key West Citizen pictured America's President-Elect Barack Obama... heralding the beginning of a new era of fairness and equality in our great nation. On the 2nd page, was an obituary marking the end of an era here in Key West with the passing of one of our great heroes and a figure of inspiration to the people of Key West. Captain Tony Tarracino has gone on to the Big Poker game in the sky. Over 60 years ago, Tony left New Jersey on the run after being beaten up and left for dead. He was 30 years old when he hitched a ride to Key West on a milk truck from Miami; he was 92 when he passed.

As with Obama, Capt. Tony proved that you could come up from a poor family to become anything you dream to be. A friend to literary greats such as Hemingway, Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams, Mayor Emeritus, adventurer, bar owner and charter boat captain... father to 13 children, Tony would kid that he wanted to make that an even number before he died and was willing try with every woman he met! He always had an eye for the ladies, but it was an eye with great appreciation of the fairer sex and made you feel good to be around him. Good thing he had a very understanding and sweet wife. Thanks for sharing, Marty! We will miss Tony and know, as in Indian lore, that his spirit will always circle above and add to the good energy of this fair island.
So, life goes on in Key West, and it is prettier than ever... We had a very rainy Fall, and that has caused our flora to be more beautiful than ever; tiny finches and butterflies hop and flitter along the trailing tropical blooms. The townsfolk are busy planning the many events that keep our visitors amused and inspired. The theaters have announced exciting seasons. The beaches are clean and the water is clear blue. Our fleet of boats is ready to take you sunset sailing or fishing for the big one. The bars are rowdy and filled with music. So, come to our island in the sunshine... we promise to restore your sprit and warm your soul. Till next time...
