Victorian Tea Leaf Reader
Victorian women were dictated to by a strict code of etiquette. Thus the affluent classes had enormous amounts of leisure time on their hands for playing popular parlor games. Tea Leaf Reading or Tasseography was one of their more popular pastimes. The game was basically a method of interpreting ones fate in the tea grounds of a cup. A pot of loose tea was brewed. A cup was poured and the person seeking answers is instructed to drink or pore out all but about one teaspoon of tea. The player then takes the cup by the handle and swirls the contents in a clockwise motion, three times, reflecting on the question of which they needed answered. The cup is then turned upside down and drained. The Reader turns the cup back up and begins to carefully study and interprets the patterns and shapes made by the tea leafs left inside the cup. Various symbols and shapes had certain meanings assigned to them. Timeframes of events to come, were estimated by the proximity of the leaves to the rim of the cup.
