Myrtle Beach, SC -
The Grand Strand Beaches are receiving their FIRST renourishment since the original nourishment from 1996 to 1998 that placed 6.4 million cubic yards of sand on our beaches! The renourishment will provide more protection for our locals and visitors along the Grand Strand and also prevent and protect against storm damage to properties along the beaches. The entire project began in Nov 08 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2009!

During active beach renourishment about 99.5% of all beaches are open and available to all visitors!
Quick Fact: Three million cubic yards of sand are being placed along the Grand Strand South Carolina Coast – meaning that ALL of this sand could be placed in an area the size of a football field and as tall as the Empire State Building! WOW! A lot of sand!
If you are vacationing along the Grand Strand (North Myrtle Beach down into Garden City) you may have the opportunity to see the sand being dredged offshore and placed on our beautiful beaches!
Some Things You May Encounter:
During active beach renourishment about 99.5% of all beaches are open and available to all visitors!
When the sand is being dredged and put on shore you will have the opportunity to explore and enjoy finding shells along with the added sand to our beach!
During the contstruction you may find that the construction contractor is directly in front of the building you are staying in... No need to worry..this contractor moves about 500 feet a day so it is typically only infront of the building for a day and moves on down the coast!
Pipelines may be along the beach outside and can safely be crossed where the sand contractor places sand ramps over the pipes.
The contractor works 24 hours a day. There may be some noise in the evening from the bulldozers.
Although some of these tips and situations that you may encounter seem like an inconvenience, it is such a postive inconvenience for our beaches! It is for safety and protection!
