Behold the French Quarter! Thé Vieux Carre! The heart of New Orleans and the ninety odd square blocks of historic structures that formed the city of New Orleans over two hundred fifty years ago! The history of the French Quarter is a glorious marriage of cultures... French and Spanish, early American, Arcadian and African American...
While the NFL only gives the Saints a 15% chance of getting to the Super Bowl after last weekend's record-breaking playoff win against the Lions, New Orleans is already gearing up for an upset in San Francisco and a trip back to the biggest game on earth!
It's usually HOT in the Big Easy... the city that never sleeps, but come winter, everyone enjoys the milder temperatures while preparing for Christmas and the biggest event of the year... Mardi Gras! The Mississippi Riverboats don a few decorations, too and never stop running excited passengers up and down the mighty Mississippi...
November is such a great time of the year and it happens to be my favorite month... not just because it's my birthday month, but because it's filled with so many fun activities and more than a few of my favorite, yet lesser known events in the city.
We are not much for hang'n around in a hotel room when we travel for leisure, but in places like New Orleans the respite is a necessity. New Orleans plethora of accommodation choices runs the gamut from intimate historic boutique properties to name brand accommodations. Among our top five favorites is the Loews New Orleans.
Have you ever been on vacation and it rains the entire time you are there? Or got excited to go attend a convention and weather keeps you inside? It just seems the bad weather can suck the fun right out of any vacation, especially in New Orleans if it creeps up on you.
Fine art, music, literary genius, architecture, cuisine... that's the fabric of New Orleans. A multi-cultural vernacular unlike anything, anywhere, established in the 1700's setting the pace for the essence of the Crescent City as we know it in the 21st century. That very legacy has been preserved and revitalized in New Orleans in the aftermath of the unmentionable event of 2005.
The taxis in New Orleans are a "Horse of a different color." Many taxi's are privately owned, so they will look different from each other. Rates vary, but approximate rates from the airport are $33 to the Central Business District (CBD) for up to two passengers and $14.00 (per passenger) for three or more passengers. Pick-up is on the lower level, outside the baggage claim area.
There may be an additional charge for extra baggage. If you have any questions regarding rates or meter charges you can contact the Taxi Bureau at (504) 565-6272.
It's so true, in New Orleans we LIVE to EAT; in fact, we LOVE to eat, not eat to live. I recently attended my 20 year class reunion in Omaha, Nebraska where I tried to explain my "N'awlin's" lifestyle. Well it's not exactly my lifestyle, it's the way of life in New Orleans (and most of Louisiana) and the way people live... we just love to eat and drink. It is more than just our famous Friday lunches that start at noon and often end sometime Saturday morning...
Gumbo has been called the greatest contribution of Louisiana kitchens to American cuisine. It’s no wonder that such a zesty and multi-layered concoction would come from one of the most colorful states in the country! A little bit of this, a little bit of that, pretty much sums of the history of Louisiana as far back as 1541 when Hernando de Soto claimed the region for Spain. Since then, the state has been governed under 10 different flags…
