The Deutsches Haus, a landmark of New Orleans' German Culture since 1928, has announced it's return of the annual Oktoberfest celebration this year. The Deutsches Haus, 200 South Galvez, has been host of the city's largest Oktoberfest celebration for over three decades.

The Oktoberfest celebration originated in German Barvaria in 1810 as the wedding celebration of Prince Ludwig I to his Princess Theresa. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. Over the years the event became a Bavarian tradition celebrating German culture, food, and spirits. Today, the annual celebration in Munich is the largest festival in the world. In the same spirit of the Munich Oktoberfest, the New Orleans Deutsches Haus’ Oktoberfest is the largest celebration of German Culture in Greater New Orleans. With more than 12,000 visitors over the five weekends, the Deutsches Haus brings tastes of Bavaria to the mid-city area in the large selection of food, beers, wines, and desserts.

Incorporated in 1928, the Deutsches Haus was formed as a benevolent and social organization which evolved from the Deutsche Gesellschaft von New Orleans and several other groups. The Deutsche Gesellschaft, whose origins dated back to 1848, provided support for the numerous German immigrants in the New Orleans area, providing them meals and housing, helping them find employment, and assisting them in reaching their ultimate destination in the United States. Expanding on its foundation, the Deutsches Haus grew into an organization with a mission to celebrate and foster the rich culture, musical heritage, language and history of the German people. Today, with it's largest event as Oktoberfest, the Deutsches Haus has over 500 active members throughout Greater New Orleans.
